2017 ‘Winter Bowl’ Flag Football Tournament

Tournament General Rules

– This is a one-day tournament with all games being played on Saturday January 28th.

– There is still free substitution with players. Each player is required to play an entire quarter. After that all players can be subbed in at the coaches discretion. Ex., a team of 12 kids, could have 4 kids play in the 1st, 4 in the 2nd, and 4 in the 3rd, allowing 2 kids to be freely subbed in those periods along with free substitution for all in the 4th quarter.

– Coed for all grades, there will not be any all boys, then separate coed for same grade level.

– if a team cannot put together a single grade level, they can combo into a grade level and play up.

– Teams will play multiple games, with games possibly starting as early as 8:00 am.

– All decisions of the Tournament Director are final and not subject to any appeal.


– Teams may be formed from any public or private school within the boundaries of the city of Irvine.

– There is a coed team possible in each division level (participation permitting). If there is not enough players for separate teams a co-ed team will be formed and play in the boys division.

– Teams are be formed by the following divisions:

  • Boys:  3rd Grade | 4th Grade | 5th Grade | 6th Grade | 7th Grade | 8th Grade
  • Girls:  3rd/4th Grade | 5th/6th Grade | 7th/8th Grade

– Schools are permitted one  team per division.

– Team rosters are determined by the school and coach.

– All players must participate on the team of the Irvine or IUSD school that they attend.

– Any player who resides in Irvine, but does not attend and Irvine elementary or middle school, can participate for the school within whose IUSD/TUSD-identified boundary he/she resides. As to whether the player earns a spot on that school’s team is at the discretion of the coach and administration of that school.
– Any school located in Irvine can participate in Irvine portion (including the three TUSD schools, Orchard Hills, Hicks and Myford)

Scheduling / Brackets

– Championship rounds are played on the Saturday January 28th (minimum of two games, with the potential of three).

– Games start as early as 8:00 AM, and as late as 8:15 PM (we cannot accommodate special requests for game times, thanks for understanding).

– Bracketing will be done by drawing school names out of a hat, by the Tournament of Champions staff.

– If there is an odd number of teams, there will be a play-in game that will be randomly determined.

Duration of Matches

– Four 10 minute quarters with a 5 minute half-time

– Championship games will have four 12 minute quarters with a 5 minute half-time

– Free substitution (at any time, play to play, series to series, etc.)

– If game is tied there will be an overtime period to decide a winner (see overtime rules in rule sheet)

– 6 players per side

Game Rules

Ball Size

– 3rd-4th Grade: Pee-wee size

– 5th-8th Grade: Junior size


– $25 per player

– Includes: Jersey and a minimum of 2 games
